Tips for Decorating Your First Home

by Gary R. Eisenach 07/19/2021

Purchasing your first home is an exciting milestone. While it may have been overwhelming to search for available properties and submit an offer on the one that fit all of your criteria, the real work begins after you sign the papers and get the keys. Now that you are a homeowner, it's time to decorate the space and make it truly feel like yours.

For first-time homeowners, decorating can be overwhelming and tiring. Here are a few tips that will help you have fun while decorating each room in your new house:

Do a Deep Clean of the Entire House Before You Paint and Decorate

Before you begin, you will want to have a fresh, clean home to work with. Try not to bring those boxes filled with all of your stuff into your new home until you do a thorough cleaning of every room. You will want to wash the walls, dust the baseboards, clean the floors and make sure that each room is as pristine as possible before you begin unpacking. This will allow you to make the best use of your space and successfully decorate each room in the house.

Think About What Style and Theme You Want to Implement

Your entire house doesn't have to match precisely, but you will want your decor to flow from one room to the next. For instance, you don't want to go with a beach theme in one room while opting for farmhouse chic in another. Look at what is currently trending in home decor and find a theme that suits your personal style. You can find unique ways to carry out the theme in each room, allowing for a consistent flow throughout your home.

Approach Decorating One Room at a Time

Breaking your decorating projects into individual rooms will help the process feel more manageable. Begin with the most personal room - the bedroom - and decorate it completely before moving onto the next room. You will feel more accomplished when you have one fully decorated room rather than several rooms that are only partially decorated.

Consider the Size and Location of Each Room Before Buying Furniture and Decor

Taking measurements is more important than most first-time homeowners realize. When you are in a furniture or home decor store, your perception of the size of each piece is influenced by the high ceilings, bright lights and open spaces of the showroom. That same piece may look exceptionally large or out of place in your new home if you don't take measurements first and shop according to size.

It's Always Going to be a Work in Progress

Try not to get discouraged while you are decorating your first home. Decorating is not a process that is completed overnight, and it can take time to feel like your new home is completely finished. The best thing that you can do is relax and enjoy setting up your very own home.

The best part about decorating is that it is not permanent. It's your first home and your tastes and preferences are going to change overtime. In a few years, you can always start the process over and give your house a fresh, new look!
